I don't think I'd ever notice a place like City Pizza, until a friend emphatically raved about this place's calzone. First of all, the name doesn't scream anything special and the restaurant's exterior isn't the most inviting either. But this little hole-in-the-wall eatery on Ellice Ave is worth checking out. Trust me, there is no décor to speak of here. The place has a few tables and an empty glass counter and quite honestly, looked a bit sad and quiet here. But you have to look past all these things and focus on the delicious food that will come out of that kitchen. This place is a Halal restaurant and yes, they serve pizza but they also serve calzones, fried chicken, lamb and chicken kebabs amongst other items.
The folded chicken calzone here is great! It's filled with chicken tikka, salad, and this creamy sauce. A small calzone ($8.69) is quite large; it can probably serve 2 people for lunch, one person if you want to be in a post lunch coma. I ate half of mine and had the rest for dinner. I'll ask for less sauce next time but this is a really delicious calzone filled with really moist and flavourful chicken (all white meat). The chicken tikka is very addictive and is an Iraqi version, not Indian, though there are similarities. The chicken tikka comes as a pizza topping too so I had to try that on my next visit. The pizzas are between $7-$12 depending on the flavour and comes in three sizes (S/M/L), the small can easily feed two people. I tried the small chicken tikka pizza for $8.59; it's a thin to medium crust, with a good coverage of cheese with a decent amount of chicken.
The 2 piece fried chicken and fries order was more of an impulse item. No one needed the fried chicken but we thought, for $2.99, how can you go wrong? Well, first of all, we didn't get any fries in our take out but whatever. The drumstick and thigh pieces were so brown and oh so deeply fried for about 5 mins too long. Luckily the meat wasn't super dry, thank goodness for the dark meat. But there wasn't much flavour to the chicken so suppress your urge to order fried chicken and stick with the other items.
The "mixed grill" kebab meal ($16.69) comes with 2 chicken tikka skewers, 2 lamb kebabs, 2 naan bread, sauce (similar to a mayo) and what they refer to as a BBQ salad is really roasted tomatoes and onions. Once again, the portions in the mixed grill are large enough to share. The lamb kebabs are addicting! I don't know what kind of spices they mix in there but it's excellent! All the flavours meld perfectly when you assemble the lamb kebab in the naan with the roasted tomatoes and onions and the mayo like sauce. This is a definite winner, so if you like the Lebanese offerings from Shawarma Time and Baraka Pita, try City Pizza's Iraqi take on the lamb kebab! -

One of the best places for calzone. I've been to this place million times and will go another million times. Each time is the same taste and smell. Love each and every single bite of it.
Les Saj restaurant (in Winnipeg) needs to learn from this restaurant in food quality, taste, and price. -

Estimated 45 Minute Delivery time - Ok, I can deal with that. But an hour late past 45 minutes? Calzone was cold when I finally got it. That's pretty bad, no courtesy call or discount offered? Never ordering from here again.

Great food, small menu. Best is either the chicken calzone or the Jordanian Shawarma. Both tasty and delicious. Make sure you ask for the dipping sauce

The place does not look the most up-to-date but its one of those hidden gems you can't miss out on. The staff is great and realistic on time of food. There are some tables and a tv while you wait. Some may feel the area is rough but just have common sense and lock your doors like you would anywhere else. My Calzone (mixed meat) was incredibly filling for two people and very delicious. They also have a few other options. Definitely the king of calzones! They cater in Middle Eastern tastes and have a basic but simple menu that allows them focus on the main quality of their food. Would love to go back, very affordable.
